This was good for me to read today, and I'm sure Dennis will appreciate the good food and the flowers, even if from another realm. :)Makayla Steinerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04762705881026755184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184118879551973868.post-56859371044035603282011-10-24T20:15:20.488-07:002011-10-24T20:15:20.488-07:00So there's a thing I read that Joan Didion wro...So there's a thing I read that Joan Didion wrote, just the quote actually, I want to read the whole book, but you know, book lists are long. But in the quote I read, she said that part of our grieving is for ourselves, "as we were, as we are no longer" which is my only explanation for why I retell/revisit my stories of loss: I'm trying to figure out who I was/am now? I think we have to tell our stories to each other because we grow in a collective way not as an individual. I think. Possibly. These are ideas I wish we could talk about in person over some fruit pie for breakfast.

What was Dennis' occupation? And tuck this (from a favorite of mine and Jesse's) away somewhere, especially the last two words:

“Tell the angel who will watch over your future destiny … to pray sometimes for a man, who like Satan thought himself for an instant equal to God, but who now acknowledges with Christian humility that God alone possesses supreme power and infinite wisdom. Perhaps those prayers may soften the remorse he feels in his heart. As for you … this is the secret of my conduct towards you. There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die … that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living.
“Live, then, and be happy … and never forget that until the day when God shall deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is summed up in these two words—wait and hope.”

The Count of Monte CristoSaritahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16594920525263954799noreply@blogger.com
